Cavan Senior Road Championships

Bailieborough retain overall Title

The Cavan Senior Road Championships took place on Sunday the 12th of April in conditions more reminiscent to sunny August weather at Kilnaleck ably hosted by Innyvale AC. With the overall title, which Bailieborough won comfortably last year, up for grabs positions in every race were keenly contested.

The longest race on the card was the Senior Mens 10k which included a few notable absentees, however the athletes set off undeterred at a blistering pace which was cut to a four man leading group consisting of the Shercock pairing Noel Carroll and Brian McCarey, Bailieborough’s Philip Smith and Annalee’s Aoghan O’ Reilly. By halfway the group was cut to the Shercock pairing with Noel Carroll gradually beginning to pull away from his compatriot opening up a marginal gap, which he maintained all the way to the finish. McCarey held on comfortably for silver with Philip Smith producing a strong run for bronze. Conor McCarey overtook Aoghan O’ Reilly in the closing stages for fourth.

The Senior Ladies race set for 3k boasted a large field, which was encouraging to see. Innyvale’s Eimera McGovern again proved to be the strongest winning gold with Bailieborough’s Louise Kearns not far behind in second with Shercock’s Fiona Murray beating her team mate Lisa Clerkin to the bronze medal. Interestingly all three teams joined together on 15 points each with the result being determined on each teams third scorer which meant Bailieborough were victors ahead of Shercock in second and Innyvale in third.

In the V1 Masters men Shercock’s Albert Eakins making a welcome return to competition was first to break the tape ahead of Innyvale’s Donal Briody with Bailieborough pairing of Maurice and Michael Meehan placing third and fourth respectively. In the V3 Masters men category it was a Laragh 1 2 3 with Brian O’ Reilly leading his charges home ahead of Vincent Craig and Michael Smith.

In the V1 Masters Ladies category Annalee’s Lyla Dolan prevailed ahead of Bailieborough’s Elaine Smith with Innyvale’s Patricia Mc Alernon scooping third. Also in winning form was Annalee’s Anne O Donoghue in the V3 Masters Ladies Race.

When the overall results were totted up Bailieborough were again overall winners with Innyvale in second and Laragh third. The next domestic competition is the third leg of the Spring League taking place on Sunday next the 19th of April in Claremont Stadium Navan.
